“The Lake Munson Canoe (8LE5785) was exposed during a recent draw down of the lake. It is a prehistoric dugout canoe approximately 500 to 800 years old. It was made from a pine or cypress hollowed out by prehistoric inhabitants of the Fort Walton cultural period (1000 AD to 1450 AD) using fire and stone tools. Exhibiting a platform on either end, it is incredibly well preserved.”
“L to R: BAR’s [Bureau of Archaeological Research] Kevin Porter, Franklin Price, Roger Smith and Florida Public Archaeology Network’s (FPAN) Barbara Hines assess the condition and length of the canoe.”
