DE SOTO'S JOURNEY - In 1539, after landing in Tampa Bay, de Soto undertook an epic 4,000 mile journey in search of a place to colonize, Christianize, and find gold. The journey took him north to modern day Tennessee and west of the Mississippi river through the deserts of today’s Texas.
